When it comes to Hualien, besides the magnificent Taroko Gorge, the Buluowan Recreation Area is a must-add to your itinerary! My autumn visit was particularly memorable. Located in the heart of Taroko National Park, Buluowan is tucked away in the heart of the city, surrounded by lush mountains. The most striking feature is the Mountain Moon Suspension Bridge, which spans the Liwu River Gorge. The vibrant red leaves contrast with the emerald green, and the stream shimmers beneath the bridge, creating a fairyland in the clouds.
Highlights
🌉 Mountain Moon Suspension Bridge: Standing high above, you can gaze down upon the deep ravine. The interplay of towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters before you, and the autumn breeze caressing your face, is an instant breathtaking experience. It's recommended to visit the suspension bridge in the morning or evening to avoid the crowds and truly experience the mist-shrouded beauty.
🍁 Autumn Viewing: Every autumn, Buluowan's vibrant red leaves adorn the Cangshan Mountains. Combined with the fresh air and tranquility away from the city, it's the perfect place for a tranquil getaway.
Recommended Attractions
1. The Buluowan Recreation Area is stunning in itself. Besides enjoying the canyon scenery, you can also visit the Taroko Cultural Exhibition Hall. Detailed signage along the promenade and green space provides insights into the lives and culture of the indigenous people.
2. After crossing the Shanyue Suspension Bridge, be sure to stop in the middle to overlook the Liwu River. The vertical cliffs on both sides, and the winding stream shimmering beneath your feet, create a sense of grandeur.
3. The nearby trails are gentle and easy to walk, perfect for a family stroll. Take your time to enjoy the autumn colors of the forest without rushing; every step is a tranquil and beautiful experience.

Tips
✔ The fog and clouds can be extremely variable in autumn, sometimes creating a magical scene. Bring a light jacket, as the temperature in the mountains fluctuates greatly between morning and evening. ✔ The suspension bridge has limited capacity. During holidays, it's popular, so please book your tickets in advance on the Taroko official website. Waitlisting may not guarantee availability.
✔ Signals can be spotty in the mountains, so it's recommended to research transportation options before heading out. Buses run from nearby Buluowan, making it convenient for those who prefer not to drive.
✔ It's recommended to prepare a light meal or snack in downtown Hualien. There are limited dining options within the recreation area, so remember to take your trash with you!
✔ Keep your phone fully charged while enjoying the scenery; you'll be snapping away as you try to capture the clouds and red leaves.
