📍#Saruiwa (Iki, Nagasaki)
A signature tourist spot on Iki, this 45-meter-tall rock formation resembles the profile of a monkey. Up close, it truly looks like a monkey gazing off into the distance, a stunning work of art created by nature. Its silhouette stands out at sunset, making it an especially striking sight.
📍#Shishiiwa (Kumano, Mie)
Located along the coast of Kumano, this rock formation resembles a lion roaring toward the sea. Standing there and gazing at it, the roar, combined with the sound of the waves, is truly impressive. Also known as part of the Kumano Kodo World Heritage Site, this spot blends history and nature.
📍#Godzillaiwa (Oga Peninsula, Akita)
With the sunset behind it, this rock resembles the silhouette of the monster Godzilla. If you time it right, you can take a popular "flame-throwing shot" of the sun spitting out of its mouth. They look so realistic it's hard to believe they were a trick of nature, and I couldn't help but take a barrage of photos.
Japan's top three strangely shaped rock formations are all examples of accidental beauty created by the power of nature. They're beloved symbols of their respective regions, and stopping by on your travels can be a little surprise.
