Here’s a 2-day off-the-beaten-path itinerary for Jianshui 🚩 This low-key town in southern Yunnan is full of surprises! Stay in a smart hotel, stroll through a luxurious garden, and this guide will help you avoid 99% of the pitfalls~
🏰 Must-visit attractions:
Zhu Family Garden - Admission 35 RMB
Truly worthy of being called the Grand View Garden of southern Yunnan! A maze-like mansion with over 120 rooms. It’s best to follow a guide (or you’ll really get lost 😵). The carved gates and opera stage are perfect for photos. I spent a long time exploring and found several hidden courtyards. The wisteria trellis in the back garden is stunning in the afternoon light!
🚂 Jianshui Mini Train - Hard seat 120 RMB
The station is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The vintage narrow-gauge train is great for photos. You can get off at Shuanglong Bridge and Xianghui Bridge stations to explore. Afternoon trips are recommended for capturing the sunset light on the tracks, creating an amazing atmosphere~
🏨 Accommodation recommendation:
Polin Hotel (Jianshui Ancient Town Mini Train Branch)
📍 Hongyu Xintiandi Area C, Donglin Road, Lin’an Town
√ Smart toilets + projector + Xiaodu speaker, bedding tested super comfortable
√ The front desk staff are very friendly and helped book discounted mini train tickets
√ 10-minute walk to the ancient town, Walmart right at the door, very convenient
🍲 Food radar:
Old Jianshui BBQ (Shuyuan Street Branch) - A fly-by-night spot recommended by a homestay owner, the grilled tofu dipped in secret spicy sauce is amazing
Lin’an Restaurant (Ancient Town Center) - Must order the steam pot chicken! The broth is so fresh it’ll blow your mind
Papaya Water roadside stall 3 RMB per cup, perfect with roasted sweet potatoes
💡 Tips:
1. The best light at Zhu Family Garden is after 4 PM, remember to bring a wide-angle lens
2. Book mini train tickets 2 days in advance, weekends are very popular
3. Strong UV rays in Jianshui, bring sunglasses + sunscreen
4. The ancient town’s stone paths are uneven, sports shoes are recommended
