Before I visited, I just thought "Oh, it's just a garden..."

You can see Sakurajima from all over the place

I even took a boat to see it

But!
When I went, the view was many times more amazing than I had imagined!

Of course, the garden is well-maintained and there are many things to see

It's no wonder that it was used as a villa by the feudal lords!

There are also remains that show how cutting-edge Satsuma was at the end of the Edo period. The lantern where Saigo Takamori is said to have experimented with gas lamps and the reverberatory furnace for casting iron cannons were very interesting and I enjoyed them so much that I forgot about time. The only thing that was unfortunate was that the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, which introduces the history and culture of the Shimazu clan, was closed. It is scheduled to reopen at the end of September 2024, so I hope to be able to visit Kagoshima again. There were also some very nice shops and restaurants in Sengan-en. Due to time constraints, I took out some janbomochi (rice cakes with two sticks) this time. I enjoyed the bite-sized rice cakes that have been loved in Satsuma since the Edo period at my accommodation. 📌Sengan-en・Shoko Shuseikan
