It began with the birth of the Kamakura Shogunate.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is said to have originated when Minamoto no Yoritomo built the foundations of the shrine here, when the Kamakura Shogunate's headquarters was in Kamakura. Today, it's a famous tourist spot that's a must-see for any visitor to Kamakura. Early in the morning, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is still sparsely populated, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely visit in the clear air.
