Kōtoku‑in is a serene Buddhist temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, best known as home to the iconic Great Buddha of Kamakura ( Kamakura Daibutsu). The Great Buddha – Kamakura Daibutsu. The statue of Amitābha (Amida Buddha) stands approximately 13.35 m tall including the base (about 11.3 m for the statue proper), and weighs around 121 tonnes . Originally enshrined inside a temple, the structure was destroyed by typhoons and a tsunami over several centuries—leaving the Buddha exposed to the open air since the 15th century. The bronze statue dates from c. 1252, constructed during the Kamakura period financed by Lady Inada no Tsubone and Priest Jōkō .
