I walked through the city of Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture.
First, I walked down the main street lined with historic warehouse-style buildings, coming across the city's iconic Time Bell.
Afterwards, I stopped by Hikawa Shrine, surrounded by tranquil greenery. Founded approximately 1,500 years ago, this shrine is beloved as a guardian deity for matchmaking and families, and its main hall is also impressive.
Colorful wind chimes swayed in the wind within the shrine grounds, their sound, along with the summer air, lingering in my memory.
When I was tired from walking, I stopped off at Ogawakiku, a long-established eel restaurant. Founded in 1807, the restaurant blends seamlessly into the warehouse-style streets, where I enjoyed unaju (grilled eel on rice). The savory eel and sweet and spicy sauce were a refreshing way to recharge my body after a long journey.
This half-day tour of Kawagoe combined walking, seeing, and tasting. It was a day filled with the city's atmosphere, sounds, and flavors.
