Ancient Mongolia

Located near the ruins of Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, Erdene Zuu Monastery (also known as 光显寺) is Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery. Founded in 1585, it's a testament to the country's rich Buddhist heritage, which survived decades of purges during the communist era.
A striking feature is the monastery's immense fortress-like wall, adorned with 108 stupas—a number sacred in Buddhism. While much of the original complex was destroyed, several of its beautifully preserved temples and artifacts remain, offering a unique glimpse into Mongolian history and art. Today, it serves as both a museum and an active place of worship.
