Yannan Academy

#SeptemberDestinations2025

Kinmen's Yannan Academy is Kinmen's earliest cultural and educational sanctuary. Legend has it that it was built or lectured by the Song Dynasty Confucian scholar Zhu Xi, inspiring local literary talent and producing numerous Jinshi (imperial scholar) graduates during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Later, in the late Ming Dynasty, Taiwenyan Temple (Yannan Palace) was built on the site of this academy, primarily deifying the Black-Faced Qingshui Patriarch, creating a unique coexistence of academy and temple.

The current Yannan Academy was rebuilt by the Kinmen County Cultural Affairs Bureau between 2008 and 2011. Its interior features a "Hui" (Chinese character "回") shape. The main hall houses the Taiwenyan Temple, dedicated to the Black-Faced Qingshui Patriarch; the rear hall houses the Zhuzi Shrine, dedicated to Zhu Xi, Wenchang Emperor, and Kuixing Ye. It is a popular spot for praying for academic success and exams. The wings on either side of the academy are designed as spaces for art exhibitions and events, showcasing calligraphy and books. The plaza outside the academy features a large scroll art installation inscribed with Zhu Xi's poem "Reflections on Reading," a popular photo spot. Due to its elevated location, it also offers a great view of Kinmen and Xiamen.
