As I crossed the bridge linking Merdeka Square to the old heart of Kuala Lumpur, I caught my first glimpse of Masjid Jamek—the oldest mosque in the city, nestled at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. Surrounded by colonial architecture and the quiet rhythm of water, the Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque stood peacefully, framed by palm trees and Moorish domes.
Walking along the riverside path, I found the back entrance and stepped into the mosque grounds—my first time entering a mosque, ever. Like many, I had heard various narratives about Islam, often colored by media and misconceptions. But inside these gates, what I found was not division—but stillness, serenity, and a quiet openness.
If you’re walking through Kuala Lumpur, pause by the river. Let this historic mosque surprise you—with its beauty, and the quiet truths it holds.
