Lose yourself in a magical bamboo forest

There’s a strong possibility that you’ve seen this bamboo forest on TV, in a movie or on social media. It’s an iconic feature of Kyoto and draws big crowds all day long.

There are a few bamboo corridors that link the various temples and waterways in this beautiful town.

It’s the perfect place for photos and to relax, it’s a tranquil place compared to the bustle of Kyoto city.

it’s best to get there early to avoid the crowds as it gets very busy and can be hard to get photos. Its easily accessible by taxi and bus and it’s also the final stop on one of the Kyoto tram lines.

We got to the bamboo around 7AM and had most of the areas to ourselves. As we were leaving to see the temples around 7:30 it had started to get very busy.

After the bamboo you can explore the local town and temples, there are lots of places to eat but they all open around 9:30/10AM
