[Kyoto Prefecture] Konkai-Komyoji Temple, the head temple of the Jodo sect

Konkai-Komyoji Temple is said to have begun in 1175 when the monk Honen descended from Kurodani on Mt. Hiei and built a hermitage here. It is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism and is known to locals as "Kurodani-san." It is one of the seven main head temples of the Jodo sect, and its mountain gate is inscribed with the words "The First Gate of Jodo Shinshu," and it is said that Honen's teachings of Jodo Shinshu began here. It is also a temple with ties to the Shinsengumi.
