The Kamo River, running north to south for a total length of 23 kilometers, is one of the iconic scenic spots in Kyoto. The best way to explore the Kamo River is, of course, by renting a bicycle and riding along its banks.
As you cycle along the riverbanks, you can listen to the gentle sound of flowing water while taking in the beautiful scenery on both sides. Then, take a break to enjoy the cool breeze, bask in the sunlight, and watch the river and the green grass. You can also observe people on the opposite bank, whether they are cycling, hiking, or jogging, each enjoying their own activities...
Ride for a while, take a break, and then ride some more.
The river is dotted with many uniquely shaped large stones called 'stepping stones,' which have become a distinctive feature of the Kamo River. Both tourists and locals love to come here to play a game called 'jumping turtles.'
Continue cycling until you reach the Kamo River Delta, where it gets really lively. People are playing in the water, sitting on the stepping stones reading books, or gathering in groups on the grass playing guitars... This spot is also a famous filming location for movies and TV dramas.
Since I cycled along both banks, one side was easy with the wind at my back, while the other side required a bit more effort against the wind.
