Manners & Precautions to Keep in Mind When Traveling to Kyoto

1. No Unauthorized Entry into Private Property (Fines May Occur)
Do not enter the alley in front of your residence without permission from the traditional streets (especially the Gion area). In particular, taking unauthorized photos or entering a residence in Gion is subject to fines. (Fines of up to 10,000 yen) There are many places in Gion with “No Photo Zone” signs, so be sure to check them!

2. Absolutely No Unauthorized Dumping of Trash
There are almost no trash cans on the streets in Kyoto. You have to carry your own trash and dispose of it at your accommodation, etc. If you throw away cigarette butts or beverage cups, you will be a big nuisance + fines may apply.

3. Precautions Regarding Bicycles
No parking on the sidewalk, only use designated bicycle parking lots. If you park illegally, you will be towed immediately + fined (in the thousands of yen range)

4. Manners at temples/shrines
No trespassing in areas with entrance fees. No loud noises, no phone calls, no eating, and no photography in many areas (be careful with flash)

5. No unauthorized photography of people wearing kimono
It is very rude to take pictures of locals/tourists wearing traditional clothing without permission.
It is especially problematic in warm weather, and there are cases where people are reported for taking pictures like hidden cameras!
