Kyoto's Oldest Guardian｜To-ji Five-Story Pagoda

One of the stops on this trip to Kyoto was To-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. Its most famous feature is the 55-meter-tall five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. The towering structure is highly visible even from a distance.

The temple grounds are not very large, but the atmosphere is serene and solemn. When I visited, there weren’t many people around, making it especially pleasant to stroll through the area. Inside the Lecture Hall and the Golden Hall, there are numerous Buddhist statues and sculptures, all well-preserved. There are also simple guides available to help visitors understand the historical background of To-ji Temple.
