📍 Kyoto Nijo Castle Visit Review

Nijo Castle was built in Kyoto by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. It was the center of Japanese history and power. Upon entering, passing through the outer walls and moat, the majestic structure comes into view. Particularly impressive was the "Uguisu floor" (robin-like flooring) in the corridors of Nakamaru Palace, where you could hear your footsteps. This device was described as a way to detect intruders, which was fascinating. 🏯

The castle interior features a cloistered layout, with gardens and buildings harmoniously arranged. The murals and gold leaf decorations remain intact, evoking the grandeur of the shogun. The outer garden is a quintessential example of Japanese landscaping, with its harmonious combination of waterways, pine trees, and stonework, offering a different landscape each season. The lush greenery in summer and the vibrant autumn foliage make for a delightful stroll. 🌿🍁

The overall tour route is well-organized, so it takes about an hour and a half to explore at a leisurely pace. While photography is restricted inside, photos of the garden and exterior of the building are permitted. This is a must-see attraction for anyone wanting to see Kyoto's historical architecture at a glance. Even if you're not a history buff, the beauty of the architecture and garden alone will leave a lasting impression. 📸
