Kyoto World Heritage Tour! The Beautiful Gardens of Ninna-ji Temple

Ninna-ji Temple, located in Kyoto, Japan, is a historic Buddhist temple founded in 888 during the Heian period by Emperor Uda. As the head temple of the Shingon Omuro sect and a 'Monzeki Temple' (a temple traditionally headed by members of the imperial family or nobility), it holds a unique history where members of the imperial family or aristocracy served as chief priests until the late 19th century.

The temple was once destroyed during the Onin War (1467–1477) but was rebuilt in the 17th century with the strong support of the Tokugawa shogunate. Most of the existing main structures date back to the early 17th century. Ninna-ji features attractions such as the Five-Story Pagoda, the Golden Hall (Kondo), the Nio Gate (Nio-mon), and the Omuro cherry blossoms, which are known to bloom later than other cherry blossoms in Kyoto. The expansive grounds also include walking paths and traditional Japanese gardens, offering a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

Additionally, Ninna-ji is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the designation 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.' The temple enshrines Amida Buddha as its principal deity and preserves the elegance of ancient Japanese Buddhist culture and imperial temple traditions. Visitors can pass through the Nio Gate, explore the Golden Hall and Five-Story Pagoda, and stroll through the beautiful gardens to fully experience the royal Buddhist culture of Japan.
