[Kyoto, Shimogamo Shrine⛩] A visit to the sacred forest where the legend of Tamayorihime and Kamo Taketsunumi lives on

Located near the confluence of the Kamo River and Takano River in Kyoto, Shimogamo Shrine (also known as Kamo Mioya Shrine) is an ancient shrine that, along with Kamigamo Shrine, has been revered as the guardian deity of the Kamo clan. It is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines and is registered as a World Heritage Site, part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto."

This shrine enshrines the mother and daughter deities, Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto and Kamotaketsunumi-no-Mikoto.

According to myth, Kamotaketsunumi-no-Mikoto was a land deity who protected Kyoto, and his daughter Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto became pregnant from a red arrow she found in the Kamo River and gave birth to the thunder god Kamo Wakeikazuchi-no-Okami (the main deity of Kamigamo Shrine).

In other words, Shimogamo Shrine is dedicated to the "mother goddess," while Kamigamo Shrine is dedicated to the "child goddess." Visiting both shrines is said to grant blessings for the connection of life and matchmaking.

The Tadasu Forest, which stretches across the grounds, is a primeval forest spanning approximately 120,000 square meters, offering a tranquil atmosphere that makes it hard to believe you're in Kyoto City. Simply walking through the dappled sunlight is enough to purify your soul.
