【Kyoto】A Hidden Autumn Foliage Spot in Sagano: Adashi Nenbutsu-dera Temple

Nestled quietly in the mountains of Sagano, on the outskirts of Arashiyama in Kyoto, lies the ancient temple "Adashi Nenbutsu-dera," which dates back to the Nara period.

The temple is famous for its 1,200 moss-covered Rakan statues scattered throughout the grounds. Each of these stone statues was carved and donated by worshippers, making every statue unique in expression and character.

At the top of a steep hill stands a small main hall surrounded by rows of Rakan statues. Encircling these statues, maple and Japanese maple trees turn a vibrant red, making this a hidden gem for autumn foliage enthusiasts.

★ Best time to visit for autumn foliage: Mid-November to early December

While it used to be a secluded spot visited by only a few, it has recently become popular among international visitors. However, compared to places like Kiyomizu-dera Temple, it is still relatively quiet, allowing for a more leisurely experience during the autumn season.
