Ginkaku-ji: The Wabi-Sabi Beauty of Higashiyama Culture

Ginkaku-ji (officially known as Jishō-ji) was originally built as a mountain villa by the eighth Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimasa, inspired by Kinkaku-ji. Despite its name "Silver Pavilion," the Kannon-den Hall was never adorned with silver foil, instead embodying the distinctive wabi-sabi aesthetics of Higashiyama culture through its simple wooden structure. The temple grounds feature the famous Moon-Viewing Platform and the Sea of Silver Sand garden, along with the Kannon-den Hall and Tōgu-dō Hall preserved in their original form. With its garden scenery that charms in every season, Ginkaku-ji stands as a serene UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyoto.
