Who knew Lanzhou was so perfect for city walking! Besides the must-visit Zhongshan Iron Bridge, this northwestern city with the Yellow River running through it hides many artistic spots. Follow my route to experience the unique charm of the Golden City~
🚶Citywalk Highlight Routes:
▫️Yellow River Scenic Line
Start at Baita Mountain Park and walk south along the riverside trail. The 5-kilometer-long riverside path connects Lanzhou’s most beautiful cityscapes. It’s especially pleasant to stroll in the early morning or evening, where you can also see locals dancing in the square or practicing Tai Chi.
▫️Dazhong Alley
A food paradise for old Lanzhou residents! This century-old alley hides the most authentic Lanzhou flavors: Ma Zilu beef noodles, Duji sweets’ gray beans, Ruji barbecue’s lamb skewers... Walking and eating is the right way to enjoy it.
▫️Reader’s Building
The headquarters of Reader’s magazine is surprisingly beautiful! The modern glass building paired with the Reader’s Museum is a must-visit for art lovers. The Reader’s Café on the 7th floor offers a fantastic view overlooking the Yellow River.
▫️Waterwheel Expo Park
A free spot perfect for photos! Dozens of antique-style waterwheels line the river, with the Yellow River as a stunning backdrop. There’s also a teahouse in the park where you can rest; ordering a cup of Sanpaotai tea while watching the waterwheels turn is especially relaxing.
▫️Wuqing Mountain Park
The favorite morning exercise spot for locals, with well-maintained hiking trails that take about half an hour to reach the summit. The Mani Temple and the statue of Huo Qubing at the top are worth seeing, and the panoramic view of Lanzhou is unbeatable!
🍜 Food Guide:
√ Zhengning Road Night Market (opens at dusk): milk egg fermented rice, fried pala, stuffed cold noodles
√ Nongmin Alley: old-brand hand-pulled lamb, braised lamb
√ Nanguan Ethnic Flavor Street: a gathering place for authentic Hui cuisine
📌 Practical Tips:
1. Lanzhou has a big temperature difference between day and night, remember to bring a jacket
2. Shared bikes + subway can basically reach all attractions
3. Remember to book the Provincial Museum in advance (closed on Mondays)
4. The Yellow River night cruise to see the light show on both banks is a great value
