The Leshan Giant Buddha is a large Buddha from the 8th to 9th century, 71m in height overall, with the Great Buddha itself measuring 60m, making it the largest existing ancient Buddha statue. It is registered as a World Heritage Site.
Originally a salt producing region, it was built with donations from the public as a sign of gratitude and to help calm floods.
The summit is right next to the face of the Great Buddha, so you can get a good look at it. It is said that the ear holes have been dug, and the nose is made of wood and pasted on. There is a square hole in the side wall, but this is the mark where the wood was inserted, and the Great Buddha was covered by a building. In recent years, acid rain and rising river waters have often damaged the Buddha statue, so we hope that it will be maintained as it is for future generations.
Opening hours: 8:00-17:30
