Time Slows Down: A Peaceful Spring Walk in Baisha Old Town

As part of my spring itinerary through Yunnan, I visited Baisha Old Town, one of the oldest and quietest of the Lijiang ancient towns. Compared to its more touristy neighbors like Dayan and Shuhe, Baisha felt like a step back in time — simple, authentic, and unhurried.

The cobbled streets were framed by old Naxi-style homes and local shops, many still run by families who’ve lived there for generations. Spring added a soft beauty: peach blossoms blooming in courtyards, snow still visible on the distant Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

I sat at a quiet café with a view of the mountains and watched daily village life unfold — elderly folks chatting under the trees, kids biking past temples, and the faint sound of traditional music in the air.

Travel Tips:
• Come in the morning or late afternoon: Fewer people, better light for photos, and a peaceful vibe.
• Try local Naxi snacks: Handmade pastries and barley cakes are often sold by village vendors.
• Photography tip: Spring flowers and snow-capped mountains make for striking contrasts.
• Good place for cycling: Flat, scenic roads connect Baisha with Shuhe and nearby villages.
• Shops are mostly local-run: Great for handmade textiles and Naxi embroidery.
• No entry fee: Unlike Dayan Ancient Town, Baisha is freely open to all.
• Calm, walkable, and slow-paced: Ideal for travelers who want an authentic local feel.

How to Get There:
• By taxi or Didi from Lijiang Old Town: ~20-minute ride. Just enter “白沙古镇” in the app.
• By bike: Many travelers cycle from Shuhe (about 4–5 km) or even from Dayan.
• By public transport:
• Take local buses heading toward Baisha or Yulong County, then walk from the roadside stop.
• By tour or private driver: Can be included in a half-day Lijiang countryside route.
