Imagine trading the bustling city for the tranquility of nature in just 35 minutes! For five years as a teacher, I enjoyed this hidden gem of a commute, skipping central London entirely and swapping one peaceful village (Walthamstow) for another (Hampstead), ending at the stunning Heath.
START: WALTHAMSTOW VILLAGE
• Begin near The Ancient House on Church Lane.
• Grab a delightful coffee on Orford Road.
• A quick 5-minute walk to Walthamstow Central (Victoria Line).
THE COMMUTE (Approx 35 mins)
1. Victoria Line Southbound to Highbury & Islington (10 mins).
2. Cross to the Overground (Mildmay Line, Westbound) for Hampstead Heath Station (8 mins).
3. Arrive: The Heath is just a 2-minute walk away.
FINISH: HAMPSTEAD HEATH
• Step straight onto the Heath from the station.
• Keats House: 5-minute walk.
• Parliament Hill viewpoint: 10-minute walk.
• The reward: Leaving one quiet village for another, with ancient woodland and skyline views replacing the Tube crush.
Total time: ~35 mins (Walk to station: 5 + Tube: 10 mins + Change: 2 mins + Train: 8 mins + Walk to Hampstead Heath: 2 mins)
Why I liked it: A direct commute between two unique London villages, bypassing the crowds. If you’re seeking a serene escape from the city, this route is a must-try!
