Simple History — Longji Rice Terraces

The Longji Rice Terraces, also called the Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, are located in Longsheng County, about 2 hours from Guilin, China. Their history dates back over 650 years, starting in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) and growing during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) Dynasties.

The local Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority people built these terraces by carving the steep mountainsides into step-like rice fields. This made it possible to grow rice in a very mountainous area and helped prevent soil erosion. Generations of villagers have carefully maintained the terraces using traditional farming methods, passing down their knowledge and unique culture.

Today, the Longji Rice Terraces are famous for their stunning beauty — the fields change with the seasons, from mirror-like pools in spring to lush green in summer, golden in autumn, and frosty in winter. They are also a symbol of the harmony between humans and nature.
