Longmen Grottoes 🏯

We were at Longmen Grottoes on a mild, overcast morning, and the moment we stepped onto the riverside path, we knew this was going to be special 🪨🙏 The carvings thousands of them lined the cliffs with such detail and variety that we kept pausing every few steps just to take it all in. We went from tiny Buddha niches to towering stone figures, and seeing the massive Vairocana Buddha up close was awe-inspiring. The scale, the expressions, and the surrounding cave carvings created an atmosphere that felt both sacred and grounded. Even though we had seen photos before, nothing compares to the quiet presence of being there in person.

What made the experience even better was the flow of the entire site 🌿🚶♀️ We strolled along the Yi River, crossed the bridge to view the grottoes from across the water, and looped back slowly under the shade of trees. The paths were peaceful, the air fresh, and there was a calm rhythm to the visit that made it easy to lose track of time. It didn’t feel overly touristy or rushed we were able to explore at our own pace, take quiet breaks, and really absorb the surroundings. If you’re ever in Luoyang, this is a stop that’s absolutely worth making.
