Stepping into John Rylands Library feels like crossing a portal into another realm. The moment you push open its heavy wooden doors, the scent of aged paper and candle wax hangs in the air, whispering secrets from centuries past. The Gothic architecture with its stained-glass windows, twisting staircases, and shadowy reading rooms—could easily be a set of a horror film.
I visited on a misty October afternoon, and every flicker of light through the arches felt almost… alive. Legend has it some visitors have heard soft footsteps echoing behind them when no one was there. Whether it’s the restless spirit of John Rylands himself or the ghost of a long-lost scholar, one thing’s for sure, the library holds more than just books.
If you love history, mystery, and a dash of the supernatural, add this to your Halloween travel list. Just don’t linger too long in the reading room after dark!!!
