We visited Matsumoto-jō Castle, and it easily ranks as the best castle we’ve been to outside of Himeji. The moment we saw its striking black-and-white structure reflected in the moat, we were captivated. It’s often called the “Crow Castle,” and you can instantly see why—elegant, dark-wood panels and a perfectly preserved silhouette make it stand out beautifully against the backdrop of the mountains.
What we appreciated most was the peaceful atmosphere. Unlike some other popular landmarks, the castle grounds weren’t crowded when we visited. It made for a calm, leisurely walk around the moat and through the gardens, allowing us to really take in the surroundings without feeling rushed.
Inside, the original wooden interiors and steep staircases gave us a real sense of the history. You could almost imagine the samurai looking out from the watch towers. It’s one of those places where you can feel the past in the quiet creaks of the floorboards.
If you’re exploring central Japan, Matsumoto Castle is an absolute must-visit—rich in history, beautifully preserved, and peacefully majestic.
