🏰 History
Built in 1592 during the Sengoku period by Ishikawa Kazumasa, Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s few remaining original castles. Unlike hilltop fortresses, it was constructed on flat land, making it a unique example of hirajiro (flatland castle) architecture. It served as a strategic stronghold through the Edo period, and its elegant yet formidable design reflects both military and cultural sophistication.
