Matsumoto Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, is a National Treasure castle with Japan's oldest surviving five-story, six-story castle tower. It's also affectionately known as the "Black Castle," as a famous castle that conveys the majesty and beauty of the Warring States period to the present day. Its jet-black walls shine under blue skies, and in winter they're blanketed in snow, creating a mystical sight in spring with the cherry blossoms.
The castle tower's interior is lined with steep staircases, but the higher you climb, the more fascinating the ingenuity of the defensive structures of the time becomes. From the top floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Matsumoto city and the Northern Alps, a view truly worthy of being called a world-famous castle.
Swans and carp swim in the surrounding moat, creating a tranquil atmosphere befitting a castle town. At night, the castle is lit up, creating a mystical atmosphere that's completely different from the daytime.
