The castle was built between 1593 and 1594.

It is the oldest remaining five-story six-story keep in Japan and is also designated as a national treasure. The contrast between black and white makes it look cool and dignified, and is loved by many people as a symbol of Nagano Prefecture. A beautiful black and white castle reflected in the mountains of the Northern Alps.
