Fukuurabashi Bridge is an eye-catching sight and an absolute must-see when visiting Matsushima. Painted in a vibrant red, the bridge stands out vividly against the natural blue and green tones of the bay — making it a picturesque location perfect for photography. Whether you’re up close or viewing it from a distance, it’s hard to miss this bold and beautiful landmark.
The bridge connects the mainland to Fukuurashima, a small island that requires a modest entrance fee to visit. Crossing the bridge offers lovely views of the surrounding bay and islands — a peaceful, scenic walk that feels like stepping into a traditional Japanese painting.
During my visit, I was lucky to witness a small car slowly driving across the bridge, something quite rare and unexpected, which made the moment feel even more memorable.
Fukuurashima itself is a compact island, easy to explore in under an hour. There are a few scattered structures and shrines, and the island paths lead through quiet greenery with occasional viewpoints over the bay.
Fukuurabashi is not just a bridge — it’s a visual icon of Matsushima and a tranquil way to experience the beauty of the region from both land and sea.
