🏯 Matsuyama Castle Travelogue
When you arrive in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, the first thing you'll notice is Matsuyama Castle, towering over a hill. Perched high enough to be visible from anywhere in the city, it exudes a majestic presence all its own.
🚡 Getting to the Castle
There are two ways to get to Matsuyama Castle:
• Ropeway and Lift (a single-person chairlift)
• Walking Trail
I particularly enjoyed the lift, which slowly ascended the hill and gazed out at the panoramic views of Matsuyama City below. The breeze on my face was a delightful, charming experience, almost like riding an amusement park ride.
🏯 The Majesty of the Castle Keep
As I approached the castle entrance, stone walls and wooden ramparts unfolded before my eyes. The atmosphere of Japan's Warring States period was clearly preserved, and the castle keep, in particular, boasted a stately yet refined beauty.
Inside, steep wooden stairs ascended, and exhibits such as armor, weapons, and old maps were scattered throughout, creating a sense of history. Climbing to the top of the castle keep afforded panoramic views of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea in all directions. The landscape of sea, city, and mountains blended together was breathtaking, defying words.
🌸 Different charms for each season
• In spring, cherry blossoms fill the castle grounds, creating a scene where the castle appears to float amidst a cloud of white and pink blossoms.
• In autumn, the maple leaves paint the castle walls a vibrant crimson, and in winter, the snow-covered castle offers a spectacular sight. I visited in early summer, and the deep green forest and clear sky made the castle shine even brighter.
🍵 Small pleasures
After descending from the castle, stroll along Ropeway Street (ロープウェイ道) and you'll find souvenir shops and teahouses lined up. A visit to Dogo Onsen (道後温泉) would be a perfect addition to your day. Grabbing a matcha ice cream, I strolled along the streets, lingering in the castle's afterglow.
