Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of Greek Orthodox monasteries built atop massive rock formations. True to its name, which means "suspended in the air" in Greek, the area features a series of peculiar rock formations creating a unique landscape. Starting in the 9th century, hermits began living in the caves, and by the 14th century, monasteries were constructed.
For access, the recommended route is from Thessaloniki to the nearest town, Kalambaka. Thessaloniki itself is home to Byzantine-era ruins that are also UNESCO World Heritage sites, making it a great addition to your itinerary. From Kalambaka, buses are available to tour the monasteries. The Great Meteoron Monastery and Varlaam Monastery are particularly worth visiting.
