Meteora was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site in 1988. In Greek, the word 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air' or 'above the sky,' which is why it is often referred to as the Sky City.
From the caves built by monks in the 11th century for seclusion to the monasteries constructed in the 14th century to escape the Islamic rule of the Turks, Meteora once boasted up to 24 monasteries atop its rock pillars during its peak. Today, only six of them remain active.
If you opt for a one-day tour, it takes about four hours by car to reach the destination. On the day of the tour, you will typically visit all the monasteries open to the public, spending approximately 45 minutes at each. Including time for queuing, exploring, and taking photos, the schedule is just right. For monasteries that are not open, the itinerary will include time to view them from a distance. The tour also includes a visit to the observation deck, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the aerial monasteries and take plenty of photos before heading back.
If you want to explore different aspects of Greece, this Sky City is undoubtedly a great choice.
