We thought we were prepared, but nature proved us wrong. The Earnslaw Burn Track in the Glenorchy area of Otago is a challenging tramping track that takes you through bush to a stunning viewpoint with views of an icefall on Mt Earnslaw. The 25km return trek requires river crossings, route-finding skills, and extreme caution in severe weather—something we learned the hard way.
What should have been a long but manageable hike turned into an 8-hour battle against slippery trails and freezing conditions. Every step felt risky, and exhaustion set in fast. By nightfall, the temperature had dropped below zero, and the snow-covered ground offered no warmth. Sleep was nearly impossible, but somehow, between shivering and laughing at our situation, we made it through.
Morning light revealed an incredible winter landscape—pristine snow, towering icefalls, and untouched wilderness. Unfortunately, reaching the official viewpoint was too dangerous, so we had to turn back, but surviving the night was victory enough.🥶
Would I Do It Again?....Not in winter! No matter how strong you think you are, it’s dangerous. But despite the struggle, it was an unforgettable experience—torture yet fun. Next time, I’ll be back in summer when the trail is safer and just as stunning!✨️🤩 #travel #thingstodo #naturalwonders #newzealand #hiking
