Tokyo Kichijoji Art Center Ongoing × Japonica "Karaokekan" Experience

Tokyo Kichijoji Art Center Ongoing x Japonica "Karaokekan" Experience

① What is Art Center Ongoing?
• A contemporary art hub that opened in Kichijoji in 2008. In addition to the gallery space, it is a complex that also houses a cafe and bar and an art library.

• A variety of events are held every weekend, including exhibitions, symposiums, and live performances. It is a place to question "what's happening in art right now" and explore the future of new forms of expression.

• Admission is ¥400 plus a choice of tea, and the gallery is also designed to be easily accessible.

• The gallery also offers an artist-in-residence program called Ongoing AIR. Japanese and international artists stay for two months, creating and exhibiting their work (now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 academic year).

② "Karaoke Pavilion" Installation by Japonica (2019)

• **Japonica** is an art collective formed in Shinjuku in 2002. Describing itself as "pranks, parodies, and frivolous simulacra," the group's activities are characterized by their interplay of social media and exhibition spaces.

• Their Golden Lion-winning work, "Karaoke Pavilion," was exhibited at Art Center Ongoing from June 19-30, 2019.

• "Karaoke Pavilion" is an installation modeled on karaoke, a symbol of Japanese culture. It is a unique attempt to reconstruct this everyday entertainment space as art, elevating it into an experience imbued with humor and criticality.

After seeing Japonica, I highly recommend the Art Center Ongoing residency, an exhibition space with a lot of freedom for art students around the world.
