I visited Mount Osore on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. The surrounding area is filled with the smell of sulfur, a desolate landscape with few plants, rattling windmills, and the famous Itako (Japanese medium) singing, all of which activates all five senses. There is also a free hot spring where you can purify yourself before praying. It takes about an hour to walk around the whole area, so sneakers are recommended. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are close to the other world, and it's strange how a sacred feeling develops while praying. I thought of my deceased family members.
