[Nagasaki] World Cultural Heritage Site Gunkanjima

Gunkanjima Island, located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is officially called "Hashima Island."
It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015!

Since around 1890, it has served as an undersea coal mine, supplying coal for steelmaking.

At its peak, the island was home to a whopping 5,200 people, even though it's only 480 meters long and 160 meters wide.

Of course, because the residential area is so small, the island holds many historical records, including Japan's first reinforced concrete high-rise apartment buildings and rooftop gardens, Japan's tallest nursery school, elementary school, and junior high school, and Japan's first dolphin pier.

After the mine closed and the original buildings collapsed, the island became too dangerous to land on, and for a time it became abandoned.
However, since around 2005, it has been open to the press and general public as a "heritage of modernization,"
conveying its history to the present.

You can learn about its history at the Nagasaki City Gunkanjima Museum on Nagasaki Island, but we also recommend taking a tour of Gunkanjima to experience its current state up close. 😊

During the tour, you can even enjoy Gunkanjima mascot Gansho-kun's castella ice cream. 🎶
