The Atsuta Festival is the grandest of the 70 or so festivals held at Atsuta Shrine each year. The emperor's envoys are sent to the shrine to display goheimotsu (white paper streamers in Shinto belief). The shrine is decorated and attracts visitors with lanterns or Kentou makiwara, fireworks, martial arts competitions or festival entertainment, and a procession of floats by children called kodomo mikoshi.
