The thousand-year-old sacred tree of Atsuta Shrine, the Great Camphor

A popular attraction in Atsuta Jingu is the Big Camphor tree, which was planted by Kukai himself. It is over 1,000 years old. Kukai was a monk sent to Japan by the Tang Dynasty and the founder of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. He was highly respected. The towering thousand-year-old camphor tree stands quietly, with a wall offering sake next to it and the sun shining down. The tree has witnessed many past events at Atsuta Shrine and has become a sacred and solemn presence here.
