Shurijo Castle Park

Shurijo Castle was constructed around the 15th century, during a time when Okinawa was not part of Japan but governed by the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, also known as the Ryukyu Nation or Ryukyu Kingdom. From 1429, when the Ryukyu Kingdom unified Okinawa, until its dissolution in 1879, spanning approximately 450 years, Shurijo Castle served as the royal palace and the political, diplomatic, and economic center of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was not only the residence of the royal family but also the location of the central administrative offices and ceremonial rituals.
On October 31, 2019, a fire broke out, destroying seven buildings, including the main hall, north hall, and south hall. Restoration efforts are currently underway!
