Despite the vicissitudes of life, Shuri Castle still quietly watches over generations of Ryukyu people!

Shuri Castle (Ryukyuan: Sui Ugusuku) is located on the main island of Okinawa, Japan today. It was the most important political, diplomatic and cultural center during the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Legend has it that Shuri Castle is protected by the powerful spirit "Tamadera" (one of the tombs of the Ryukyu kings). Whenever the castle is in danger, the spirit of the Jade Tomb appears to protect the royal family and the people.

There are two beautifully carved dragon pillars in front of the main hall of Shuri Castle. According to legend, the pair of dragons have the power to protect the country and are an important symbol of Shuri Castle's prosperity and security. If there is an invasion by foreign enemies, the dragon pillar will emit light to warn the king.

Shuri Castle has experienced many fires and wars, the most serious of which was its almost complete destruction during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. After years of reconstruction, it became one of the symbols of Okinawa. However, it was hit by another fire in October 2019, and the main buildings were burned down. Reconstruction is expected to be completed in 2026.

Currently, you can buy a ticket to see the current state of restoration of the city area - 400 yen/person, and the park surrounding Shuri Castle and part of the city area are free to enter.
