Whenever I travel, I always recommend starting your exploration of a new destination at its local museum – it's the best way to really get to know a place! And the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum is truly an underrated gem in Okinawa!

There's no reason not to go! It's a fantastic spot to escape the summer heat, gain some knowledge, admire beautiful architecture, and even get some great photos. What's not to love?

About the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum

Architectural Marvel: Designed by architect Shuji Nose, its unique structure draws inspiration from ancient Ryukyu castles (Gusuku).
Award-Winning Design: The building itself has received prestigious accolades, including the 2008 Japan Institute of Architects Award.
Extensive Collections: As of 2017, the museum boasts approximately 94,000 artifacts, while the art museum holds around 3,700 pieces.
Diverse Exhibits: The museum features five distinct exhibition rooms covering general history, natural history, archaeology, fine arts and crafts, and folklore.
