By the end of my trip, my body and mind had grown accustomed to the city's rhythm. I didn't feel like exploring further afield, but instead wanted to savor the details around me that I'd so hurriedly overlooked.
Kokusai-dori is an old friend, and today I decided to explore those parallel veins—the quaintness of Tsuboya-dori, the bustle of Heiwa-dori, the lively atmosphere of Yatai-mura, the vibrant life of Ichiba-hondori, and the fragrant seafood of the Daiichi Makishi Public Market. Each street is a different expression of the city, some gentle, some fierce, some melancholic, some cheerful.
As Calvino said in "Invisible Cities," "A city does not reveal its past; it hides it like the lines of a hand. It is written in the corners of streets and alleys, on window guardrails, on stair rails, on lightning rods, and on flagpoles. Each mark is the mark of scratching, filing, chiseling, and pounding."
