It was a cloudy day during our visit to Kouri Island back in mid-April 2025. Despite the lack of sun, the island maintained its peaceful charms and emerald waters.
—> Getting There & Around
Public transport is limited as Kouri Island is located in northern Okinawa. Before entering the island, you can stop by the Kouri Bridge viewpoint for stunning views—though unfortunately, it was drizzling during our visit, so we didn’t manage to get any good shots. It’s highly recommended to drive or cycle around the island, as the attractions are quite spread out. Also, keep in mind that there are few to no street lights outside the main areas of the island. It’s best to wrap up your activities before nightfall—unless you’re staying for the stars ✨
—> Attractions
There are multiple beach spots scattered around Kouri Island, including Tinu Beach (Heart Rock), Tokei Beach, and Chigunu Beach, each offering its own unique coastal charm. Unfortunately, due to the weather during our visit, we weren’t able to fully explore these seaside experiences.
—> Food
Kouri island offers a variety of local and fusion cuisine options. There are also several cozy seaside cafés offering local dishes, tropical smoothies, dessert and pastries with stunning ocean views. Kouri Shrimp is a popular spot known for its juicy garlic shrimp bowls. Nishikiya is another spot we tried that specialises in luxurious seafood bowls featuring fresh, thick-cut sashimi, sea urchin, and eel. Prices tend to be on the higher side, as these are well-known tourist spots. Also, keep in mind that shops and restaurants on the island generally close early, so be sure to check the closing hours in advance.
