Gokayama, located in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is a hidden gem home to Gassho-style villages registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alongside Shirakawa-go, this area is renowned for its two villages, Ainokura and Suganuma, offering a picturesque landscape that feels like stepping into a fairytale.
The steeply sloped thatched roofs are a testament to the ingenuity and wisdom of living in a heavy snowfall region. Many of these houses are still inhabited, allowing visitors to feel the pulse of daily life as they stroll through the area. Each season brings its own charm: the magical snow-covered scenery in winter, lush greenery in spring and summer, and vibrant autumn foliage. Local delicacies such as handmade Gokayama tofu and mountain vegetable soba are also highlights to enjoy.
