The symbol of Todaiji Temple: the Great Buddha Hall

#Nara #TodaijiGreatBuddhaHall

The Great Buddha in Todaiji's Great Buddha Hall is said to be the second largest Buddha in Japan. (The first is the Ushiku Daibutsu in Ibaraki Prefecture)

It was originally built during the Nara period when epidemics were rampant, by people who wanted to eradicate epidemics with the power of Buddha.

Todaiji has been burned down twice in the past, and the Great Buddha was probably damaged as well, but it still sits watching over us today as a symbol of Nara.
