From JR Nara Station (South Exit), you can take a bus that will get you there in about 10 minutes.

About Todai-ji:
Todai-ji, meaning "Great Eastern Temple", is located east of Heijō-kyō (the ancient capital), and it serves as the head temple of Japan’s 68 Koku-bunji (national temples).
The temple has been rebuilt twice due to fire, and the current structure, built in 1709, is a scaled-down version, but it still holds the title of the world’s largest wooden building.
Inside the Great Buddha Hall, you’ll find the 15-meter tall Great Buddha (Daibutsu)—a truly awe-inspiring sight!
The temple complex includes several other highlights such as the South Gate, Nigatsu-dō, Sangatsu-dō, and Shōsō-in (the Imperial treasure house). The temple's architectural style retains elements from the Tang dynasty in China, such as the dou-gong (bracket arm) design.

Cherry Blossom Path to Todai-ji:
As you walk from Himuro Shrine to Todai-ji, you’ll pass sacred deer and beautiful cherry blossoms on both sides of the road.
You’ll first reach the South Gate (Nandaimon) of Todai-ji, where you’ll find the dual guardian statues (Kongō Rikishi).
Continuing along, you’ll pass through the Central Gate (Chūmon), where you can purchase your ticket to enter.
Follow the crowd and you’ll soon see the largest cherry blossom tree, which is truly a sight to behold when it’s in full bloom! 🌸
Why Visit Todai-ji during Cherry Blossom Season?
The cherry blossoms add a magical layer to this already stunning historical site, creating an unforgettable blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.
The paths lined with sakura trees and the majestic Great Buddha Hall make for perfect photography spots, especially during the spring bloom.
