The Fort San Domingo Historic Area in Tamsui offers stunning scenery. The red brick fortress, set against a backdrop of lush green gardens, is a perfect place for photo opportunities. Therefore, every time I visit Tamsui, I make a point of visiting this historic site, a perfect blend of beauty and history. A sunny day is especially recommended: the blue sky and red bricks against the green grass create stunning photos, perfect for any photo!
If you enjoy an in-depth historical journey, Fort San Domingo is a must-see destination in northern Taiwan. It's like a living museum, encapsulating Taiwan's vicissitudes over 300 years. According to the historical display boards, Fort San Domingo was originally built by the Spanish as a military fortress on the Tamsui River, known as "City of Santo Domingo." Later, the Dutch, stationed in the south, moved north to drive out the Spanish. They occupied the site of "City of Santo Domingo" and rebuilt a more substantial red brick fortress, named "Fort Anthony." Because the Dutch were known as "red-haired" at the time, the fortress gradually became known as "Fort San Domingo." In addition to its colonial history with Spain and the Netherlands, after the Qing Dynasty took over Taiwan, Fort San Domingo was leased by the British for a long period of time as a consulate from the late Qing Dynasty until World War II. It passed through multiple regimes until 1980, when it was officially returned to the Taiwanese government and opened to the public, becoming the important cultural heritage we see today. This complex story, spanning three centuries, epitomizes Taiwan's modern history.
